SUMMARY:The Root / The Invasion (UPAD)
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Root’ is a play that deals with the issue of ecology, and will be performed as part of the ‘Upad’ theatre festival at the SCC Fabrika ( http://www.skcns.org/fabrika/ ) on 12 May at 8 p.m. The ‘Upad’ Festival ( https://kalendar.novisad2022.rs/en/events/invasion/ ) is part of the Future of Europe ( https://kalendar.novisad2022.rs/en/future-of-europe/ ) programme, which takes place from 9 to 15 May.\nThe ‘Root’ play, which combines ecology and performance, is the work by Irish artists Shanna May Breen and Luke Casserly. It was produced by the Dublin Science Gallery and co-produced by the Dublin Theatre Festival, Brut Wien (Vienna), SKCNS (Novi Sad) and the Kilowatt Festival (Sansepolcro). It is a performative inquiry that examines the importance of trees in our ecosystem – from the perspective of wood.\nAccording to scientists, trees are the key to restoring the climate of our planet. Starting from the awareness of that, the artists’ work on composing a sound experience, examining the science, history and future of trees from the perspective of trees. The basis of the research and the starting point for the project are interviews with scientists, geologists and arborists from Ireland, Serbia, Austria and Italy about the impact of trees on our ecosystems. Travelling through different cities and taking local audiences out of cities, the artists examine the relationship between listeners and the environment in order to eventually build a sonic landscape.\nThere was once a time when a red squirrel could have travelled from the north to the south of Ireland through tree-travel alone. That native forest of 80% has been uprooted over time to leave Ireland with the lowest tree cover in Europe at just 11%. Artists ask where the forest disappeared and what its ghosts would tell us now. It is especially interesting to note that as part of this art project, a new micro-forest of 1,000 indigenous trees has been planted in central Ireland. The standard price of the tickets is RSD 500, and they will be available for purchase before the start of the plays at SCC Fabrika.\n\nPhoto: Luca Truffarelli\n
