SUMMARY:The Carnival of Ritual Processions – Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Within the Carnival of Ritual Processions, the Great Hall of the Novi Sad Fair will host a panel and an expert lecture on the topic of cultural masquerading, ritual processions from the aspect of ethnology and anthropology.\nThe Carnival of Ritual Processions consists of children’s masquerade ball, musical performances, panels and professional lectures, concerts of local and international groups, which will complete the Migrations programme with their colourful content.\nThe guest at the lecture on the topic „Masks and people behind masks“ on March 3 at 4 pm will be Prof. Dr. Vesna Marjanović, ethnologist / anthropologist in the Master Hall of the Novi Sad Fair.\nThe lecture will discuss masks as a traditional model of culture, their classification, symbolism, geographical distribution, as well as masks today.\nAs part of the Carnival, a children’s masquerade ball will be held on 10 March, as well as performances and concerts on 11 March in the Great Hall of the Novi Sad Fair. Carnival is a time reserved especially for celebrations and festivals. In the original meaning of the word, carnival referred to giving up the consumption of meat, release from troubles, the expulsion of winter and welcoming of spring.\nIn the multi-ethnic region of Vojvodina, various ethnic groups added their own mark to these processions. The local German population had a significant influence on the culture of masquerades, the performance of plays and forms of behaviour, as did other ethnicities that settled in areas where they came into close contact with traditional German culture. ‘The Carnival of Ritual Processions’ evokes age-old traditions from the local area, representing a meeting point of the region’s different cultures with partners from Serbia, Croatia, Hungary and Bulgaria.\nPartner of the Migration of Souls programme is the Novi Sad Fair ( https://sajam.net/sr/ ), and the companies Globos osiguranje ( https://www.globos.rs/sr/pocetna ) and Dijamant DOO ( https://www.dijamant.rs/ ) also provided support.\nPhoto: Promo\n
