Ship – a Universal Symbol of Migration / Migrations in Art, Art of Migration
The lecture ‘Ship – a Universal Symbol of Migration’ will be held on 1 April at 7 p.m., in the Matica Srpska Gallery, as an accompaniment to the exhibition ‘Migrations in Art, Art of Migration’ which is part of the Migrations programme arch.
Throughout history, the theme of shipwrecking has often been a motif of artistic creation, as evidenced by Tintoretto’s ‘St. Mark Rescuing a Saracen from Shipwreck’, paintings ‘Survivors’ and ‘Wave’ by Ivan Aizovsky, ‘The Shipwreck’ by William Turner, ‘Raft of Medusa’ by Theodore Jericho, and many others. What is Theodore Jericho’s ‘Raft of Medusa’ talking about, which, in addition to photographs of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, served as the inspiration for Safet Zec’s painting ‘Exodus’, presented at the exhibition at the Gallery of Matica Srpska? It is historically important because of its uniqueness and technical excellence, as well as because of the universality and persuasiveness of the narrative – a depiction of human plight, suffering, and human destiny that is repeated and manifested in an always current and recognizable form.
The lecture is given by Luka Kulić, the author of the exhibition.
