Ex(YU)perimental

Ex(YU)perimental is part of the Other? Europe film programme  and represents a new segment of the ‘Experimental Superstars’ programme. A selection of exYU experimental films will be shown at the American Corner on Saturday, 19 November, at 8 p.m. It was introduced into the programme with the idea of ​​putting a special focus on the creativity of authors from the region.

Experimental film is a special type of film aimed primarily at studying the limits and possibilities of the film medium itself, the way it functions and communicates with viewers. Despite the fact that the primary goal is not to be shown to a wide audience, the result is attractive short forms, visually very striking, which can be very interesting even for an audience that does not deal with film theory.

Within this segment of the programme, we will give a special emphasis to Igor Toholj’s film ‘Uploaded Memories’, which will have its premiere in the premises of the American Corner on 19 November at 8 p.m.

The ‘Uploaded Memories’ film is an engine, automatic film. It is an experiment that reinterprets memory and its manifestation articulated in film form through the method of visual automatism, with pre-defined criteria arising from the parameters of each frame in the montage sequence. In the structure of the film, shots from the author’s private 8mm film archive shot in the former Yugoslavia, Europe and Africa, which contain fragments of his memory, alternate and vary. The synergy between human and algorithm creates their order in the film and the final result.

Igor Toholj (1968) is a film author, editor of the film programme at the Cultural Centre Studentski Grad, co-founder of the ‘Dok’n’Ritam’ festival and selector of the documentary programme of the Palić Film Festival. During the past time, he was the programme editor of many prestigious festivals in Serbia and abroad, and for his filmmaking he received dozens of festival awards.

‘Experimental Superstars’ is an international film festival of a competitive nature, which in two selections shows the latest achievements in the field of experimental film as well as music video and all other audio-visual forms that do not belong to the film category, yet use the film language.
