SOEN was first conceived as an idea in 2004, but the official formation of the supergroup happened in 2010.
The original lineup featured founder and drummer Martin López (who played with Opeth from 1997 to 2006 and recorded six albums, including some of the band’s most acclaimed works – Still Life, Blackwater Park, and Damnation; and with Amon Amarth on their cult debut Once Sent from the Golden Hall), bassist Steve Di Giorgio (ex-Death, Testament, Sadus), vocalist Joel Ekelöf (Willowtree), and guitarist Joakim Platbarzdis. This lineup released the debut album Cognitive (2012) on Spinefarm, which received positive reviews, though some critics noted a strong resemblance to Tool.
Between 2014 and 2023, the band released five more studio albums, steadily carving out their own distinct sound—especially from the highly praised Lotus onward—gaining a devoted global fanbase, particularly in the Balkans. Their latest album, Memorial, was released via Nuclear Blast.
Martin López describes Soen’s music as melodic, heavy, intricate, and unlike anything you’ve heard before.
Alongside López and Ekelöf, the current lineup includes guitarist/keyboardist Lars Enok Åhlund, guitarist Cody Lee Ford, and bassist Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel.
