akcenti novi sad

Accents – Novi Sad

On 1 February, the Day of Novi Sad, the exhibition ‘Accents – Novi Sad’ will be opened at the Foreign Art Collection, within the Migrations programme arch.

Novi Sad, a city whose origin is inextricably linked to the Petrovaradin Fortress, grew alongside the Danube River, and developed within different countries, following European trends in almost all areas of public and private life. It was an area for exciting historical processes and events, some of them tragic, and devastating to the city, and sometimes, thanks to its citizens, magnificent and celebrated. During the last three centuries, it has become a home to residents who have brought their identities with them, while also accepting the way of life in their new surroundings, as well as the uniqueness of the others, to whom Novi Sad also became a haven. That is how the distinct spirit and multicultural identity of Novi Sad were created.

Representing Novi Sad’s identity in the year it bears the flattering title of the European Capital of Culture is not an easy task. Wishing to provide information about the city’s key elements to the citizens and the guests, we have symbolically singled out 22 years, 22 accents. Our wish was to, through them, depict the European city whose citizens are different, but also the same in the fight for their freedoms, the city that has always valued education and written words and was always ready to accept new trends and challenges.

The complexity of the topic, the variety of materials and space that is available to us have greatly contributed to the concept of the exhibition being based on the chronological-thematic approach. The exhibition was conceived as a multimedia platform, which will, symbolically, be comprised of 22 units. The multi-layer interpretation of the content will allow the visitors to gain knowledge and experience different aspects of local history, from the settlements and elibertation, through the key historic events and figures, to the contemporary music scene.

The terms that connect the selected wholes into a single narrative are freedom, Europe, multiculturalism, emancipation, and expansion. By visualizing, symbolically and textually presenting rich material, and respecting the principles of modern museological practise, they wanted to conjure up and keep from oblivion the multicultural, European cultural heritage created and preserved by generations of Novi Sad residents.

The collection will be innovative – multimedia and participatory, with several additional events organized during its course (concerts, lectures, workshops, etc.).

The authors of the lead narratives, as well as texts within each unit, will be the curators of the Museum of the City of Novi Sad: Jelena Banjac, PhD, Vesna Angelovski Nedeljković, Ivana Jovanović Gudurić, Ljiljana Lazić, Marijana Ratkelić, Gordana Bulović, Olja Maglovski, Jelena Savić, Atila Hornok and Gordana Petković, who will also select the items from the museum collection, with the creative guidance and author’s stamp of Dušan Jovović, PhD.

The partners of the exhibition are the Historical Archives of the City of Novi Sad, the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of Novi Sad, and the Marketing Agency Kuća kuvarkuća.
