An Untold Story: Šumanović – Dorić – The Gallery of Matica Srpska / Sava Šumanović and European Realism Between the Two World Wars
A lecture by Tijana Palkovljević Bugarski, PhD, ‘An Untold Story: Šumanović – Dorić – The Gallery of Matica Srpska’, within the ‘Sava Šumanović and European Realism Between the Two World Wars’ exhibition, will take place at the Gallery of Matica Srpska on 3 November at 7 p.m.
Seventeen works of Sava Šumanović (1921–1925), which are kept in the Gallery of Matica Srpska and the National Museum of Modern Art in Zagreb, are part of the original, larger Dorić’s collection. The collection was created in 1925 when lawyer Dorić bought from Sava Šumanović twenty works, a couple of years after their exhibitions in Zagreb. Although limited to one segment of Šumanović’s oeuvre, Dorić’s collection provides insight into a significant period of the painter’s formative years, without which a complete understanding and presentation of Sava Šumanović’s art are impossible. Tijana Palkovljević Bugarski, PhD, and a manager of the Gallery of Matica Srpska, will explain how Šumanović’s works came into the ownership of the Gallery of Matica Srpska and what their significance is.
