Apollonia and Marija

The opening of the exhibition ‘Apollonia and Marija’ is scheduled for 18 June at 7 p.m. and will run untill 2 July in the Art Salon of the Cultural Centre of Novi Sad, as part of the Fortress of Peace programme arch.

Since 2013, the Cultural Centre of Novi Sad has been organising the ‘Freezing Silence’ programme, which commemorates the victims of the Novi Sad raid and the Holocaust. The multi-year programme resulted in this documentary exhibition, included in the official programme of the European Capital of Culture, about the shocking and tragic true story of the friendship of two women of different nationalities, German and Serbian, Maria and Apolonia, just before and during World War II. A story that also speaks of coexistence in this area and interpersonal support in the most difficult moments, personal sacrifice and solidarity. This project will present a very important segment of the common past and the fight against Nazism and fascism. The project promotes universal human values such as humanity, altruism, freedom, and the right to life. The goal of this exhibition is greater visibility and promotion of heroic and humanitarian works of individuals, including both famous and ordinary people. Focusing on positive examples from our common history in order to improve the quality of today’s mutual relations and improve coexistence in our region.
