Building Peace on the Ruins / SOC
The Faculty of Philosophy from Novi Sad, in cooperation with the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, is organizing a round table and discussion on ‘Building Peace on the Ruins’ in the Cultural Station Liman on 25 June at 11 a.m. within the Fortress of Peace programme arch.
The destruction of cultural heritage in armed conflicts to silence history and erase traces of diversity, both cultural and religious, is not uncommon.
During the wars that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, we witnessed the destruction and stealing of cultural heritage objects throughout the region. During the conflicts from 1990 to 2004, over 2000 cultural monuments were destroyed. The purpose of destroying monuments is not only physical destruction, but also the destruction of ties between people, forcing them to forget their common past and erasing differences. The protection of cultural heritage is more than a cultural issue, since this protection guarantees the right to exist of members of different cultural communities in one area. The aim of this panel is to discuss the implications of destroying cultural heritage, which are related to conflicts from the past, discover their implications for the present and offer the opportunity to reflect on practices that we must establish for a common future.
Panelists: Škeljzen Gaši, Višnja Kisić and Amina Krvavac
Moderator: Nataša Govedarica
The programme is supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum.
