Dance performance “Theory of Reality” (Mileva: Decoding)
Dance performance “Theory of Reality” is part of the multimedia event “Mileva: Decoding” which will take place at Čeličana, in Distrikt, and in this way commemorate 150 years since the birth of Mileva Marić Einstein. “Mileva: Decoding” will ceremonially open Čeličana as a new, renovated space in Distrikt, and its multimedia character will once again confirm the UNESCO title that Novi Sad received in 2023 as a city of media arts.
Dance performance “Theory of Reality”, by author and choreographer Darko Stantić and director Maja Grgić, will be presented on December 20 at 7:30 PM and on December 21 at 9 PM, performed by as many as 40 dancers from the Cultural and Art Association “Vuk Karadžić”. Starting from the very fact that kolo has been inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity, this segment relies on its universal value, placing it in a contemporary stage form, in line with the title that Novi Sad holds. The performance will feature specially stylized costumes, while the music is composed by Fran Pogrmilović. The production will be accompanied by 30 musicians from the “Artisti dell’Arco” orchestra, part of the association “Musicopolis.”

About the performance:
In this performance, time is not a line but a network of moments that intertwine and return to one another. Three times – past, present, and future – merge into a single circle that constantly closes again. At the centre of this circle is Mileva: a being layered between what she dreams, what she creates, and what she remembers.
At the same time daughter, mother, partner, and scientist, she carried all roles within herself at once, even when life demanded that she abandon them one by one. In that loop of time, she remains present. Mileva as a dream, Mileva as thought, Mileva as memory.
In the same network, Mileva is also the one who does not retreat. She never accepted the limits set by society and her time; she followed the clarity of her gift, the light that only she could understand. In an era closed to women, she was the one who opened the doors of knowledge herself.
But courage never excluded love. She carried both tenderness and ambition, desires and fears – the divide between paths that cannot be lived simultaneously. She chose between motherhood and science, between her own dreams and what life imposed upon her.
The performance combines three Milevas. What did they leave for one another, what promises did they make to themselves? Did she ever find peace? And what remains for us, after everything, as an answer?
Who was Mileva Marić, and can such an equation even be solved? We choose to remember her as a creator, as a force that pushes boundaries. Mileva is physics.
