Esther – a Graphic Novel in Holocaust Education / From Raid to Auschwitz

The exhibition ‘Ester – a Graphic Novel in Holocaust Education’ will open on 17 June at the Svilara Cultural Station. We’ll have a chance to see the exhibition, which is part of the project ‘From Raid to Auschwitz: Novi Sad – the City of Remembrance’, every day from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. until 24 June.

The speakers are:
Jan Erik Dubbelman – Director of the International Department of the Anne Frank House, Amsterdam
Martina Maschke – Director for International bilateral Affairs and Holocaust Education at the Federal Ministry of Education of Austria, Vienna

‘Ester’ is a collection of educational graphic novels about life before, during, and after the Holocaust, dramatised illustrated stories about real people based on historical material, archival documentation, historical newspapers, photographs, testimonies, and works of historians. The novels focus primarily on the lives of young people and their destinies during the war occupation, and at the same time offer a unique set of archival material, interactive maps, photographs, and research assignments for students. This unique educational concept has attracted the attention of the international professional public.

The ‘Ester’ collection is constantly growing. Since 2016, Terraforming has made several educational graphic novels which include stories about pre-war life, but also about the suffering of Jews in the camp at the Old Fairground, the survival of one Jewish boy hidden in occupied Belgrade, Ustasha’s crimes against the Roma population in Srem, the suffering of young Jews and Serbs in the Novi Sad Raid, but also about the modern research work of archivists and historians, as well as the process of creating these graphic novels. The novels were created through close cooperation with local archival institutions and several experts, and the illustrations themselves were done by various artists.
As part of the exhibition, we will experience many beautiful illustrations, historical materials, and stories based on the lives of real people.
The exhibition is part of the programme ‘From Raid to Auschwitz: Novi Sad – the City of Remembrance’ organised by Terraforming with partners from Novi Sad and several partner organizations across Europe (more information can be found on their site) as part of the Fortress of Peace programme arch.

The event is accessible to persons with physical disabilities.
