Exhibition of Paintings by Melita Kraus / Synagogue – the Meeting Point

The exhibition of paintings by Melita Kraus opens within the project ‘Synagogue – the Meeting Point’ of the ‘Fortress of Peace’ programme arch in the Small Art Gallery of the Cultural Centre of Novi Sad, and after that in the Svilara Cultural Station on 18 June at 5 p.m.

The exhibition, including watercolour paintings and an artbook by Melita Kraus will represent elements of Jewish faith and tradition, with particular emphasis on the motifs and themes with which the artist works and the artbook as a form of the readymade.

The artwork by Melita Kraus, an artist from Bjelovar, seems to have that magical power to unravel the story of the missing world of Eastern European Ashkenazi in front of the viewer’s eyes. This story unfolds on her paintings and lasts as the journey of the Jewish diaspora lasts. The sounds of klezmer music echo off the paintings, the legend about Golem emerges from the past, while little/great people from small towns fight their own life battles and last, preserved on canvases, papers and books turned into images. They travel the world with Melita. One of the stations is Novi Sad.

After the exhibition opening at the Small Art Gallery in the Cultural Centre, we move to Svilara at 6 p.m. for a conversation with the artist, which will last around 45 minutes, and a discussion moderated by Gordana Todorić.
