Fire at Sea / Art of Migration, Migration in Art

The documentary ‘Fire at Sea’ will be shown in the Gallery of Matica Srpska on 26 April at 7 p.m. The film screening is an accompanying programme of the exhibition ‘Art of Migration, Migration in Art’ within the Migrations programme arch.

Rosi’s sixth documentary removes the media-sensationalist mask off, as he points out, of ‘the greatest tragedies in modern history since the Holocaust’ and reveals the human face of the current refugee problem. The film was shot for a couple of months on the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is only 113 kilometres away from South Africa, and since the 1990s, has been a metaphor for the most massive and deadly transit of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children to Europe. Without presenting people through gloomy statistics and the semantic confusion of migrants or refugees, the film remains focused on the theme of people fighting for their right to freedom and a better life.
