From Raid to Auschwitz: Novi Sad – City of a Culture of Remembrance

From 17 to 19 June, ‘From Raid to Auschwitz: Novi Sad – City of a Culture of Remembrance’ project will be held at several locations in Novi Sad, within the Fortress of Peace programme arch.

The programme ‘From Raid to Auschwitz: Novi Sad, City of a Culture of Remembrance’ is a journey through the personal memories of those who (in)directly experienced the Holocaust. It will let us explore why the Holocaust is still relevant in understanding the social challenges. Numerous international associations, historians, directors, actors, pedagogues, museologists, and archivists joined the European Capital of Culture in the research of European and local contexts of unpleasant events, with the aim to shed light on afflictions of modern society: falsifying history, fake news, contemporary forms of antisemitism, anti-Roma discrimination, neo-Nazism, racism, and the like.

Within the event, we will commemorate 80 years since the Novi Sad raid with the exhibition at the Quay, joined by other exhibitions, panel discussions, and music and dance performances. In an attempt to return to the chronotypes of a culture of remembrance, the events will be held at sites such as Svilara CS and the Historical Archives of the City of Novi Sad, where testimonies on the mass murder of Jews, Serbs, Roma people, and other residents of the city and its surroundings are kept.
