Gaga Class / Batsheva Ensemble, Tel Aviv

Batsheva Ensemble, the famous dance troupe from Israel, will hold a gaga dance class in the Liberty Square (Trg slobode) on 4 April and will last 90 minutes. Both professional and recreational dancers and amateurs of all ages will have an opportunity to join the workshop. The workshop is part of a dance festival that will be held within the ‘Schools of the Future’ programme unit.

The Batsheva company has been recognised by critics and widely accepted as one of the most significant companies of contemporary dance in the world by the audience. Together with the Batsheva Ensemble, the troupe can boast about its 34 dances from Israel and abroad.

The Batsheva company is the greatest dance company in Israel, adorned with numerous performances on local and foreign scenes, i.e. over 250 plays performed and around 100.000 visitors every year.

As one of the world’s most renowned choreographers, Ohad Naharin took over the role of artistic director of the troupe in 1990 and ushered in a new era, guided by his adventurous curatorial vision and recognisable choreographic experience. After almost 30 years of leading the troupe, Naharin left the position of artistic director in 2018, but he continues to work as a permanent choreographer of the troupe.
Gili Navot took over the role of artistic director of the troupe in September 2018. The Batsheva dancers participate in all creative processes in the studio but also create their works within the annual project ‘Batsheva Dancers Create’ supported by the Michael Sela Fund, facilitating the progress of young artists.

The Batsheva Dance Company was founded as a repertoire company in 1964 by Baroness Bethsabée (later Batsheva) de Rothschild, who enlisted Martha Graham as its first artistic adviser. Since 1989, the residence of the troupe at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv.

During the dance festival, we will have the opportunity to see workshops and lectures of dance troupes Malpaso from Havana, in the Ballet School in Novi Sad on 8 April, the Montreal Jazz Ballet from Canada, in the Serbian National Theatre on 10 April and Jo Strømgren troupe from Oslo in the Serbian National Theatre on 29 April.
