
Literature: Matija Bećković (POSTPONED)
Literary evening with academician Matija Bećković will be held as part of the Kaleidoscope of Culture literature week, on October 13 from 7 p.m., at the Kovilj Cultural Station, which is located in the birthplace of Laza Kostić.
One of the most respected Serbian writers and poets, academician Matija Bećković was born in Senta, where his father served as a royal officer. He showed his talent for writing in high school, when he won a literary competition, and he published his first poem at the age of 18 in the magazine Mlada kultura. Growing up and the early loss of his father in 1945, he described in the poem Whose child are you?, which predestined his later involvement in politics and history. Deciding to dedicate his life to writing, he enrolled and completed literature studies at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. Bećković’s prose and poetic texts were prepared for the theater and performed on domestic and foreign stages. In addition to his literary career, Bećković also became a respected public intellectual, and has been a regular member of SANU for 32 years. He is known for his variety of genres, and Bećković has received the highest literary awards for his work, among them the Oktobarska, Zmajeva, Vukov Endowment Award and others. With his wife Vera Pavladoljska, to whom he dedicated one of his most famous songs during his lifetime, which was later performed by Arsen Dedić, he has two twin daughters, prof. of music to Ludmila and the famous serbian TV journalist Olja Bećković.
