Masterclass / Malpaso, Havana
The Cuban troupe Malpaso will hold a master class on 8 April for children from the Novi Sad Ballet School during the dance festival that is taking place in the programme Schools of the Future.
Shortly after its founding in 2012, Malpaso became one of the most sought-after Cuban contemporary dance troupes with a growing international reputation. Emphasizing the collective creative process, the troupe is dedicated to working with world-renowned authors, but also nurtures new Cuban choreographic voices.
With the support of the New York Joyce Theater Production Department, Malpaso has in his repertoire original works by numerous prominent U.S. choreographers, including Ronald K. Brown, Trey McIntyre, Aszure Barton, Emmy Award-winning Sonya Tayeh, and Robin Minack Williams.
As part of its commitment to Cuban choreographers, Malpaso also performs works by his dancers, Beatriz Garcia and Abel Roja, who were nominated for the prestigious Benois de la Danse award. They also often perform pieces by their artistic director Osnel Delgado, accompanied by the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble and Cuban American composer and pianist Arturo O’Farrill, who is a Grammy Award winner. The troupe recently added to its repertoire the works of the legendary Merce Cunningham, the famous Swedish choreographer Mats Ek and the world-famous Israeli author Ohad Naharin. In 2018, Naharin travelled to Cuba to work with the troupe’s dancers, reconstructing his famous work ‘Tabula Rasa’ with them.
During the dance festival, we will have the chance to see the workshops and lectures of the Montreal Jazz Ballet troupe from Canada at the Serbian National Theatre on 10 April and Jo Strømgren Kompani from Oslo at the Serbian National Theatre on 29 April.
