Opening of the Exhibition / Media Labyrinth

The central campaign of the Media Labyrinth project, organized by the Novi Sad School of Journalism, includes the creation and installation of a hexagonal labyrinth on the plateau of the Creative District on 23 Junе, which will serve as an interactive training ground for education on media (dis)information and manipulation. The opening of the exhibition is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The outer wall of the labyrinth will be a kind of exhibition, an educational space. All passers-by and visitors of the Creative District will be able to access this component of the labyrinth, even if they do not want to enter the labyrinth itself. Participants who enter the labyrinth trying to find the right way through it as quickly as possible will be expected to first look carefully at the exhibition area on the outer walls because this information will help them find the way out. Inside the labyrinth, there will be boards with questions and proposed answers. Only true and accurate information leads you to the exit of the labyrinth.

This interactive exhibition in the form of a labyrinthine spatial installation shows the techniques of media propaganda in the period between the founding of the European Union and the present day. The topicality of the issue of media manipulation and propaganda became obvious to many during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, it is clear that the resistance of citizens to the media pandemic is perhaps less than to the real, health pandemic.

The aim of the project is to improve media and information literacy of critical media reading as a means of contributing to sustainable reconciliation, not only in the Western Balkans region but throughout entire Europe. Disinformation and propaganda have always been an important part of warfare and other conflicts, and this is especially visible and developed in the time of modern mass media. In the broadest sense, propaganda is a technique of shaping perception, manipulating knowledge, and directing behaviour in order to achieve a result in accordance with the interests of the one who manipulates. Today, despite the technologically advanced media culture and the so-called information society, critical media reading, and media literacy are not sufficiently developed and are some of the essential elements of rebellion that we should practice for a freer modern society in which we live.
