Vladimir and Kosara

The opera ‘Vladimir and Kosara’ will be performed for the first time, within the Migrations programme arch, on the main stage ‘Jovan Đorđević’ during the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Serbian National Theatre Opera on 28 March 2022, at 8:22 p.m.

The second performance of the opera is scheduled for March 29 at 7 p.m.

Love is a great European theme that leads us from antiquity through the Middle Ages to modern times. Part of the great myth of love is the life story of Jovan Vladimir, a medieval ruler of Duklja, who has inspired many artists for centuries: writers, playwrights, and poets.

Thus, the ensemble of the Serbian National Theatre’s Opera continues the 161st season, after the spectacular opening at the Petrovaradin Fortress with Verdi’s opera ‘Aida’. Now, the oldest Serbian theatre is facing a new challenge – the premiere of ‘Vladimir and Kosara’. This is not only the first but also a unique performance of the opera whose author, composer and libretto writer is Stevan Divjaković, a citizen of Novi Sad who was also the general manager of the Serbian National Theatre (SNT) for a part of his career.

‘The opera ‘Vladimir and Kosara’ was conceived as a great historical fresco, but it is simultaneously a dream. In dreamy scenes, we use large puppets, and each of the characters has its pair in a form of a beast – Kosara is a roe silver deer, Vladimir a silver deer, Emperor Samuel a large bear, and Vladislav a black wolf,’ points out the director of the opera Aleksandar Nikolić.

The play is directed by Aleksandar Nikolić, choreographed by Aleksandar Ilić, and during Stevan Divjaković’s part, a guest from Bulgaria, Dian Čobanov will be conducting.

Musicians from the region and the member states of the European Union are participating in the project, together with the SNT’s Opera Orchestra.
