Tesla – Light Gallery
‘Tesla – Light Gallery’ is part of Doček, a platform that marks the transition between the two calendar years through a multitude of events that transform the whole city into a stage. This year’s Doček is especially important, because it also marks the year when Novi Sad becomes the European Capital of Culture.
The philosophy of Doček is unity in diversity, (co)life in duality – between two calendars, day and night, light and darkness, sound and image, past and future, tradition and modern technologies, which are connected by a single energy, just like Tesla. The baroque ambience of the Suburbium of the Petrovaradin Fortress through the ‘Tesla – Light Gallery’ exhibition becomes a meeting place for these opposites, bound by the energy of light. Exploring light as a life principle that connects all levels of existence, artists turn the Suburbium into a meeting place through various art media.
After the ‘Tesla, Inventartist’ play, we invite you to form a procession to the Suburbium, where a unique exhibition ‘Tesla – Light Gallery’ awaits us. A group of artists will take the citizens through the inspiring spaces of the baroque town, transformed through strong artistic interventions. Spatial installations will reveal different aspects of light as a means of artistic expression that actualize various Tesla’s inventions, as well as Tesla’s unfulfilled dreams.
The Rainbow Bridge, old buildings in Beogradska Street and the Belgrade Gate itself – all architectural objects along the way – will be transformed into a monumental play of light, movement and sound through fixed, dynamic, wireless and interactive audio-visual lighting technologies, including 3D projections. Nevertheless, words aren’t sufficient: the light gallery is something that must be seen and felt live!
‘Tesla – Light Gallery’ is a product of creative synergy of several famous international artists from different cities with the title of European Capital of Culture. Award-winning visual artist Petko Tančev comes from Plovdiv, Bulgaria (ECoC, 2019). With the help of the latest technology, this artist creates virtual worlds that disrupt our usual perception of physical reality. Ivan Marušić Klif creates on the Croatian media art scene as one of the prominent authors of the experimental direction. He is the director of the Rijeka Light Festival Vector Hack 2018 and 2020 (ECoC, 2020–2021). In addition to them, an important segment of the exhibition is the Italian artist Alberto Novello, known for converting found or deconstructed analogue devices from the past (oscilloscopes, early gaming consoles, video mixers and lasers) in order to explore the connection between sound and light in the form of contemplative installations and performance.
The reliable team of artists, all of whom, except Ivan Marušić Klif, are visiting and working in Serbia for the first time will be joined by students of stage design from the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad. The project was implemented in cooperation with the City Administration for Construction Land and Investments and the studio for spatial design Modelart architects (Novi Sad).
Na izložbi ‘Tesla – svetlosna galerija’ nas čekaju i velike muzičke zvezde Nipplepeople, Elektro Guzzi, Kanda, Kodža i Nebojša, Đorđe Miljenović, Noise Destruction i DJ Dark Angel 31. decembra, a dan kasnije, 1. januara, publika će uživati u nastupima sastava Kruder & Dorfmeister i Minilinija.
The synergy of artists from different parts of Europe is the best announcement, both for the opening of the European Capital of Culture and for the various programmes that will fulfill the title year under the 4 New Bridges slogan.
